Saban on Alabama’s failed goal-line drive: ‘Why do we need to be in gun?’

Nick Saban had to stifle a laugh during his weekly session explaining a play after Alabama football’s win over Ole Miss on Saturday. He was using the telestrator to describe how the Crimson Tide blocked a Rebel punt in the second quarter, giving his team the ball on the one-yard line, down 7-3 in the second quarter.

“We didn’t do great with it,” Saban said in the video released by Alabama athletics. “But at least we got it at the one.”

“Didn’t do great,” was quite the understatement by Saban. On the first play of the drive, quarterback Jalen Milroe lined up in the shotgun and didn’t appear to be expecting the snap when it came.

By the time Milroe jumped on the loose ball, the play went down as a 13-yard loss. The Crimson Tide kept going backward from there, and the final drive chart registered it as a four-play -22-yard endeavor before Will Reichard hit a 40-yard field goal.

On Monday, Saban was asked if he had since thought about whether Alabama should have just gone under center for a quarterback sneak on the first play.

“There’s a lot of thought about that,” Saban said. “It was not smart on our part to do what we did, and we get a bad snap after all that. I’m not defending anybody, but with better execution, we shouldn’t snap the ball over the quarterback’s head and we’ve got to get on the same page with the snap count. I agree with you that, at a time when it’s first-and-1 on the 1, why do we need to be in gun?”

The mistake didn’t cost Alabama the game, as the Crimson Tide offense came alive in the second half and the defense continued its stifling effort against the Rebels. The final score registered a 24-10 win for UA.

Alabama will be back in action Saturday at Mississippi State. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN.
